INFO: Stone Harbor & Avalon Beach Replenishment



A federal beach replenishment project is slated to begin in April on the borough's north-end beaches.
About 120,000 cubic yards of sand will be dredged onto beaches between 16th and 31st streets between mid-April and Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer. Another 150,000 cubic yards of sand will fill out depleted beaches elsewhere in the borough.
The dredge will continue south into Stone Harbor as part of the project. Avalon is contributing about $121,250 to the project.
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock of Illinois was the successful bidder for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project.
Officials from Stone Harbor and Avalon will meet to discuss the project on April 4.
The borrow site is off Townsends Inlet.
Meanwhile, Avalon is talking to the federal agency about trucking sand from south-end beaches onto the north end when it erodes. Typically, sand that is dredged onto Cape May County's barrier islands erodes away and gets carried on ocean currents to beaches farther south

STONE HARBOR ? On Sat., March 19, locals and visitors alike will line the 96th Street
beach in Stone Harbor. These participants will resist bone chilling March winds and freezing
temperatures as they stand side by side....in their bathing suits.

To top it off, this crowd will willingly take a running leap into the frigid (42 degrees) Atlantic Ocean.
And they’ll most likely return the next year to do it all over again. The Borough of Stone Harbor is
announcing the first ever Stone Harbor Shiver, an event that many lovingly call a Polar Bear Plunge.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squads.

A pre-registration party will be held on Friday night, March 18th at the Stone Harbor Yacht Club
beginning at 6 PM. The cost is $10 per person. Registration for the Shiver is $25 for adults and
15 for children ages 13 – 17. The first 150 registered will receive a long sleeved Stone Harbor
Shiver t-shirt. The plunge goes off promptly at 12 noon.

Local restaurants will be holding post event parties. More information can be found on the Stone
Harbor Shiver Facebook page. Checks are to be made payable to the Borough of Stone Harbor
and questions can be emailed to stoneharborshiver@gmail.com. Registration information, discounts
and deals will be continuously posted.
